Man robbed in west Wichita grocery store parking lot

WICHITA — He was simply reading a book, waiting for his friend to finish shopping for groceries.

Then a stranger opened the passenger door of his car at about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Dillons at Central and West, pulled out a knife and demanded money from him, police said. He then ordered the victim to drive to an ATM across the street, where he withdrew about $100 and gave it to the robber.

The suspect then ordered him to drive back to the grocery store, police said. The suspect then climbed into a Crown Victoria and left the area.

The 24-year-old victim called police and gave a detailed description of the suspect and the Crown Victoria. A patrol officer spotted the car about 15 minutes later near Broadway and Murdock. The man and woman inside, both 45, were taken downtown for questioning and then booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery.

The victim was not injured.
