Teen faces three charges linked to fatal shooting incident

WICHITA — A 16-year-old boy has been charged with criminal offenses in connection with the weekend shooting death of another teen, authorities said.

The boy was charged today with involuntary manslaughter, criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and a minor in possession of alcohol, said Georgia Cole, a spokeswoman with the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.

While the suspect did not have a prior criminal history, Cole said, it is illegal for a juvenile to possess a firearm with a barrel less than 12 inches long.

Police officials have said a 16-year-old boy, identified in court records as Nathaniel "Texas" Terrell, was accidentally shot in the lower chest with a .357 magnum revolver by a friend at a house in the 3300 block of South Broadway on Saturday night.

Terrell died early on Sunday morning. The suspect's initial court appearance has been set for July 20. Court records do not indicate he will be tried as an adult, Cole said.
