MU coach Haith adds two more to his basketball staff

Missouri basketball coach Frank Haith rounded out his staff Friday when he announced the hiring of Toby Lane as basketball operations director and former Tiger Matt Lawrence as a graduate manager.

Lawrence finished his playing career at Mizzou in 2009, when the Tigers finished with a school-record 31 wins, their first Big 12 tournament championship and an Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s great to have Matt return to Columbia and join our staff,” Haith said in a statement. “As Tiger fans know, he is someone that is driven to succeed and has passion for this school and this program. He will be a great asset to our players and our staff as he begins his coaching career.”

After graduation, Lawrence played professionally for parts of two seasons, including a stint in Norway. Lawrence began working on a graduate degree at St. Louis University last year.

“Coaching has been a dream of mine, and to be able to start the learning process at my alma mater is a dream come true,” Lawrence said. “I’m excited to be coming back home.”

Lane, a former assistant at Southeast Missouri from 2003 to 2007, was associate director of basketball operations for the last four seasons under Haith at the University of Miami. Lane also was Oklahoma’s video coordinator from 2002 to 2004. He is a native of Benton, Kan., who earned his bachelor’s degree from Wichita State in 1993 and his masters from Central Oklahoma in 1999.

“Toby was a valuable part of our staff at Miami,” Haith said. “He has familiarity with our state from his time at Southeast Missouri and understands our league from his stint at Oklahoma.”

Haith previously had hired three assistant coaches — Isaac Chew, Ernie Nestor and recruiting coordinator Tim Fuller — and strength and conditioning coach Todor Pandov.
