Man killed in Butler County crash was parolee

Both men who were involved in a fatal crash during a police chase in Butler County this week were parolees who were listed as absconders by the Kansas Department of Corrections, authorities said today.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office said Phillip Lamar Carter, 44, of Wichita, was killed in the crash early Tuesday in a field near Augusta. Prison records show that Carter was paroled in March after serving time for theft.

The other man was identified earlier as Delbert C. Nelson Jr., 54, of Wichita. He was paroled in February after serving time for forgery, identity theft involuntary manslaughter.

Investigators allege that the men stole a flat -screen television from a Dillons store in Andover before they crashed their pickup into a creek. Investigators are trying to determine which of the two was driving.
