Gang violence nets 24-year-old more than 11 years in prison

Thanh Do, 24, this afternoon received a prison sentence of more than 11 years , stemming from gang violence that left one man dead around Christmas 2009.

Sedgwick County District Judge James Fleetwood gave the highest sentence allowed by law, based on a guilty plea last month.

Eric Pou, 25, died in a shooting outside the Da Nang restaurant, when a fight broke out during a private Christmas party in December 2009.

Wichita police said Do was a member of an Asian street gang involved in at least two incidents that month.

Do had been charged with second-degree murder in March 2010. Last month, he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. Do also pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault in a fight a week before the shooting outside a nightclub in Old Town, where several people were beaten and stabbed.

Fleetwood ran consecutive sentences of 127 months on the manslaughter charge and eight months for aggravated assault. Do will also have to register as a violent offender once he's released from prison.
