A tornado watch has been issued for 26 counties in central and southern Kansas until 11 p.m. tonight, including the cities of Wichita, Hutchinson, McPherson, Wellington, Winfield, Great Bend and Salina.
Storms are forming in northern Oklahoma and moving northeast toward Kansas at about 40 miles an hour, weather officials say. The storms will be capable of producing tornadoes and large hail.
Weather officials say supecell thunderstorms that develop today will be capable of producing EF4 and EF5 tornadoes.
The counties in the watch: Allen, Barton, Butler, Chase, Chautauqua, Cowley, Elk, Ellsworth, Greenwood, Harper, Harvey, Kingman, Labette, Lincoln, Marion, McPherson, Montgomery, Neosho, Reno, Rice, Russell, Saline, Sedgwick, Sumner, Wilson, Woodson.
