Three teens accused of starting fire at vacant Wichita house

WICHITA _ Three teenagers playing hooky from school are in custody today on suspicion of setting fire to a vacant house in the 700 block of West Dayton, fire officials said.

An inspector with the city's central inspection office was in the area at 10:30 a.m. Monday and noticed smoke coming from the home and reported it, Wichita Fire Capt. Stuart Bevis said.

Three boys — ages 14, 15 and 16 — were seen leaving the scene as police arrived and were taken into custody. They were booked into the Juvenile Detention Facility.

Investigators found three small fires that had been set inside the home. The damage was estimated at $2,000, mostly to carpet hangings on walls, Bevis said.

There were no injuries.
