Wichita man, 23, charged with voluntary manslaughter in brother's death

WICHITA — Markee T. Washington, 23, was charged today with voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his 19-year-old brother, Malaki Washington.

He was charged by the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office during his first court appearance. His preliminary hearing is June 1. Bond was set at $250,000.

The shooting occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of North Estelle, near 13th and Grove.

The two brothers were arguing at their mother's house and continued their argument outside, where they started fighting and wrestling over a gun, police reports said.

Malaki Washington originally had the gun, but his brother took it away and shot him in the stomach, police said. Malaki died a few hours later at Wesley Medical Center.
