Law enforcement memorial ceremony at noon today

A ceremony honoring the 29 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty in Sedgwick County will be held today at City Hall.

The ceremony begins at noon in the city council chambers. Since 1871, 19 Wichita police officers, eight Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputies and one officer each from Derby and Clearwater have died while on duty.

The first was Deputy Carlos King, who died on Sept. 23, 1871. The most recent was Deputy Brian Etheridge, who was shot and killed in an ambush attack on Sept. 28, 2009. The suspect was shot and killed in a shootout with law enforcement officers several hours later.
