HIGBEE, Mo. | An autopsy has been scheduled on the body of an infant that was found inside a duffel bag in a central Missouri pond.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the baby’s body was found Sunday in a pond about two miles west of Higbee, about 35 miles north of Columbia in Randolph County.
Sheriff Mark Nichols said that based on the condition of the corpse, it appeared the baby died in the last few days. He said there were no leads in the case.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reported that the autopsy was planned for Monday, but it was unclear when results would be released.
A man and his girlfriend were walking on the private property when they saw the bag floating in the pond and pulled it out.
