Wednesday night fire near Newman University was arson, officials say

WICHITA — A mobile home fire near Newman University on Wednesday night is an arson, fire investigators said today.

A 45-year-old man suffered serious cuts to his arms while trying to escape through a bedroom window of the burning structure, Capt. Stuart Bevis said.

Neighbors pulled him out of the window, and he was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for treatment.

The fire was reported at 8:24 p.m. The mobile home, which is at 2609 W. McCormick, is a total loss, Bevis said.

The fire was intentionally set, he said, but he would not say where or how the fire started. Damage was set at $20,000.

"It's a very old mobile home," Bevis said.

The injured man was home alone when the fire started, Bevis said. The man was renting the mobile home from family members.
