LAWRENCE | Douglas County has approved a new health plan that extends coverage to domestic partners.
The commission voted Wednesday to approve the plan, which would not be limited to same-sex partners. The plan would generally cover two unrelated people at least 18 years old who have lived together in a committed relationship for more than six months.
Supporters say the new plan would help attract and retain employees, and extend equality to the couples. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that opponents say approving the plan is immoral because it places domestic partners on par with other families.
