Sunset Elementary in Newton was briefly placed on lockdown this morning after staff members heard what sounded like gunfire nearby, authorities said.
The noise turned out to be children playing with BB guns, a Harvey County dispatcher said. The children were not on school grounds, officials said.
The school, which is at 619 N. Boyd, went into lockdown shortly before 9:30 a.m., according to Jeanie Fuller, public information officer for the Newton school district. The school returned to normal operations at about 9:50 a.m.
