Wichita homeowner fires at armed intruder

WICHITA — An armed robber walked through an open patio door late Tuesday night demanding property from the homeowner who was watching television — and moments later was running for his life.

The 64-year-old homeowner pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and fired a shot at the intruder, Wichita police said.

The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m. in the 600 block of N. Brookfield, northeast of Central and Woodlawn. The homeowner had left the patio door open, and the suspect simply walked in.

Officers called to the scene found the bullet in a tree in the back yard, Lt. Steve Kenney said.

The homeowner will not face charges because he fired to protect himself from an armed intruder, Kenney said.

"Kenney said police had no reason to question the homeowner's report.

Police are searching for the suspect, who is described as a black man with a light complexion and is about 6-feet-1 and 180 to 200 pounds. He was wearing a dark blue sweatshirt and blue jeans.
