New KC mayor chooses communications director

Rumors that Danny Rotert was moving from Congressman Emanuel Cleaver’s office to KC Mayor Sly James’ office were correct.

James’ office confirmed today that Rotert will be the new director of communications. His first day will be next Monday.

Rotert has served as Cleaver’s communications director for six years and previously was a public affairs specialist for the Mid-America Regional Council.

Others rounding out the mayor’s staff:

Joni Smith, deputy communications director. Smith comes from the Missouri Department of Transportation. She is moving to Kansas City from Jefferson City.

David Rowe, policy director. He previously was manager for policy research at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Roosevelt Lyons, special assistant for community affairs. He most recently served as regional field director for Organizing for America, an initiative of President Obama.

Jason Hodges, senior adviser. Hodges was instrumental in James’ successful get-out-the-vote effort in his mayoral campaign.

Margaret Hansbrough, special assistant. She has worked with James since his campaign began two years ago.
