Trial in death of Lawrence hip-hop artist opens

LAWRENCE | A man suspected of killing a Lawrence hip-hop artist more than four years ago will stand trial this week.

Twenty-six-year-old Durrell Jones is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Anthony "Clacc" Vital in October 2006. His trial opens Monday.

Vital's body was found on a country road two miles west of Lawrence. He died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the prosecutors plan to have Jones' co-defendant, 31-year-old Major C. Edwards Jr., of Lawrence, testify that Vital owed Jones for drugs.

Edwards pleaded guilty in March 2010 to voluntary manslaughter in Vital's death.
