NEWTON — A man already charged with injuring a North Newton toddler who died after being severely abused was charged this afternoon with murdering the child, the prosecutor said.
Meanwhile, a coroner has ruled that the death of 19-month-old Vincent Hill was a homicide, said County Attorney David Yoder.
"The verbal information I have received at this time gives me reason to believe that the evidence will show that the cause of death was a combination of injuries as a result of a physical beating as well as likely evidence of suffocation ... basically oxygen flow reduced or shut off to the brain," Yoder said.
Yoder said he had been awaiting additional findings from specialized testing on the boy's brain.

Chad Carr, 26, has already been charged with aggravated battery and child abuse for injuries to Vincent. The boy died in late March.
Carr now faces the additional charge of first-degree murder.
Carr has been described as the boyfriend of the toddler's mother, Katheryn Nycole Dale. She has been charged with child endangerment, child abuse and aggravated battery over the injuries to her son.
