Woman, 70, killed at home; grandson a suspect, police say

WICHITA — A 70-year-old woman has died and her grandson is a suspect in the case, Wichita police said today.

Officers were called to a house in the 3100 block of Stadium, just west of Wichita State University, shortly before 11:45 a.m. to investigate a report of domestic violence, said Capt. Jeff Easter, commander of the Patrol North Bureau.

The woman and her grandson were both found in the living room of the house, where they both lived, Easter said. She had suffered traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at 12:05 p.m.

Her 23-year-old grandson also had injuries, Easter said, but they were minor and appeared to be self-inflicted.

He was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment, and investigators hope to interview him.

The case is being treated as a homicide, Easter said.

Relatives said the grandson had had "problems" recently with other family members, but Easter would not elaborate.

More than a dozen emergency vehicles responded to the scene.
