Topeka police pull 80-year-old man from freezing water

TOPEKA | Two Topeka police officers are being called heroes after they climbed down a 15-foot embankment to pull an 80-year-old man out of his car after it rolled down the hill and into a freezing creek.

Ken Fergel, a farmer from Shawnee County, was trapped in his car Monday night after it landed on its top in the creek. At the time, temperatures were near 20. He told the Topeka Capital-Journal that he was covered with extremely cold water but was able to keep his head above the water.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that a witness called 911, and officers Aaron Jones and Scott McEntire responded. They jumped into the icy water and pulled Fergel through a window.

Fergel is being treated for hypothermia at a Topeka hospital.
