Wichita weather: Sunny skies, but bitter cold for metropolitan area

Don’t let the sunshine fool you: Today will be bitterly cold in the Wichita area.

Wind chills will dip near -20 today as strong north winds blow steadily in the teens and gust to more than 25 miles an hour, forecasters say. The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory until noon today and then again from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Highs should barely nudge into double digits today, and overnight lows tonight are expected to tumble well below zero. The record low for Feb. 3 is -7 in Wichita, and it may fall, forecasters say. Though winds should ease overnight, those low temperatures will again push wind chills to -15 to -25.

Thursday’s high under sunny skies is expected to climb into the upper teens.
