Woman on trial for murder in death of husband

WICHITA — Prosecutors say when Melinda Hazelton shot her estranged husband, it was murder.

Hazelton's defense says John Hazelton, 44, was shot after years of abusing his former wife and daughter.

A jury will decide whether Melinda Hazelton should go to prison for second-degree murder in a trial that began this morning before Sedgwick County District Judge David Kaufman.

Richard Ney, Melinda Hazelton's lawyer, will present evidence of her claims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Prosecutor Shannon Wilson is trying to show Melinda Hazelton intentionally shot her estranged husband during an argument the morning of Nov. 13, 2009, at a home he was visiting in the 1200 block of West 19th Street. He died the next day.
