Missouri Rep. Emerson breaks arm after slipping on ice

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. | U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson is recuperating at her southeast Missouri home this week after slipping on ice and breaking her arm.

Emerson's chief of staff, Jeffrey Connor, said Thursday the Republican congresswoman was injured while preparing to host a dinner Saturday at her Cape Girardeau home. He said Emerson broke the humeral bone in her left arm, which is now in a sling.

Because of the injury, Emerson did not attend President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech earlier this week in Washington, D.C. Connor said she watched the speech — as well as the Republican and the tea party responses — on television.
