Robber leaves convenience store without taking money

WICHITA — The unexpected arrival of a customer was enough to foil a robber's attempt to get money from an east Wichita convenience store Tuesday night, police said.

A clerk at Petro America reported that a man came into the store at 8008 E. 21st St. at about 9:10 p.m., said that he had a gun — gesturing toward his pocket to back up his words — and that he wanted money and cigarettes.

The clerk put cigarettes on the counter, but before he could retrieve money from the register, another customer came into the store.

That startled the robber, who grabbed the cigarettes and left. He drove off in a silver Chevy SUV. The clerk said he is a black male in his 20s, about 5-feet-7 and 170 pounds.
