JEFFERSON CITY | Fewer Missourians died on the state's roadways last year, the fifth year in a row that the deaths decreased.
Officials report that 821 people died in traffic accidents last year, compared with 878 traffic deaths in 2009. They say the number of traffic deaths last year was the fewest in more than 50 years.
So far this year, the Missouri State Highway Patrol says there have been about 30 deaths in traffic accidents.
Officials say there are several reasons for the decrease, including educating people about traffic safety and improvements in emergency medicine.
