WICHITA— Steve Harris closed the gap on Pete Meitzner this morning during a count of provisional ballots, but not enough to overtake him and earn a spot in next month's general election for the District 2 seat on the Wichita City Council.
Meitzner had 10 more votes in the primary than Harris after Tuesday's polls closed. Harris picked up 10 more votes from among the 38 provisional ballots cast from District 2; Meitzner had eight.
That left the final vote total at 1,310 for Meitzner and 1,302 for Harris.
Meitzner will join Charlie Stevens in the April 5 general election to represent District 2, which covers much of Wichita's east side.

Stevens also picked up eight more provisional votes and finished with 1,440.
Today's count took take place at the Sedgwick County Election Office. Of the 38 ballots, two were not allowed.
Provisional ballots are cast at the polls on election day when questions arise about a voter's eligibility.
