Suspect in Columbia sex assault kills himself, police say

COLUMBIA | Police say a man who sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman in Columbia killed himself after attempting two more assaults.

Police Sgt. Dan Beckman says the woman was assaulted in a grocery store parking lot Tuesday night. She told police he was armed and forced her into a pickup truck, where the assault occurred.

Beckman says when she escaped and ran into the store, the man drove off.

The Columbia Tribune reports that police believe he tried to assault another woman in Columbia and one in Boonville, but both women talked him out of it.

Early today, the man was in a brief standoff with Lafayette County sheriff's deputies on Interstate 70. A county news release says the suspect shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
