About 270 soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division headquarters and headquarters battalion will return to Fort Riley this week after serving a year in Basra, Iraq.
A ceremony is planned for 10:30 a.m. Thursday. In recent months, soldiers from the division and battalion have been gradually returning to Fort Riley.
While in Iraq, the division assisted Iraqi forces in securing polling sites during the national election in March and oversaw the reduction of U.S. forces. It also worked with reconstruction teams that completed numerous civil projects in Basra, including a children's hospital, an industrial park and a business center.
