WICHITA — Police today warned the public about scams involving fraudulent checks sent in an attempt to gain real money from victims.
Wichita police Lt. Doug Nolte cited a case, reported to authorities Monday, where a man received a check from an unknown source. The check, which turned out to be fraudulent, was sent to "secret shopper." The point of the scam was to get the recipient to deposit the check and then send back some money.
The man's bank informed him that the check was fraudulent.
The man suffered no loss, Nolte said.
Nolte said it illustrates that people should be wary of checks sent to them, unsolicited, and from unknown sources. It could well be part of a con game, he said.
Nolte asked that if people encounter similar solicitations, they should call police at 316-268-4646 and ask to speak to the financial crimes section.
