Clerk chases after man who stole lottery tickets

WICHITA — The customer told the clerk he couldn't decide which lottery tickets to buy, and he wanted to look at the different kinds available.

As it turned out, he wasn't planning to buy any at all, police said.

He snatched up dozens of the tickets from a countertop of the Phillips 66 convenience store at 7115 W. 13th St. at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and ran out the door, police said.

The 46-year-old clerk decided he wouldn't lose the tickets without a fight, so he ran after the suspect and tried to get into the man's pickup as he was driving away, police said.

He was able to only get partially into the vehicle before falling to the ground, however, injuring his left leg in the process.

The clerk was able to provide a detailed description of the pickup, though, and officers pulled the vehicle over a short time later.

The 18-year-old driver was arrested, police said, and the 166 stolen lottery tickets were recovered.
