Ribbon-cutting today for project on 17th Street

WICHITA - A ribbon-cutting is set for today to celebrate improvements along 17th Street from Grove to Hillside.

The $3.4 million reconstruction project, which began in July 2009, provides new pavement and storm water drainage, with left turn lanes at 17th and Hillside. The ceremony is scheduled at 3:30 p.m.

About 20,000 vehicles pass through the intersection of 17th and Hillside each day, city officials said. The turn lanes will increase traffic efficiency and safety at the intersection, which marks the southwest corner of Wichita State University.

Storm water improvements have addressed groundwater seepage that has contributed to maintenance problems and pavement failure in the area.

The project included planting 24 trees and 100 shrubs at the northeast corner of 17th and Hillside. Landscaping work is scheduled to be complete in October.
