FORT RILEY -- The 1st Heavy Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, will hold a deployment ceremony today at 1 p.m. at Fort Riley's Custer Parade Field.
The ceremony will honor soldiers of the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, who are scheduled to deploy for a year to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. This will be the brigade's first deployment since 2004.
Only a portion of the brigade will deploy as an advisory and assistance task force. That's a sign that Iraqi forces are assuming increased responsibility for their own security and governance.
The families of the soldiers who are deploying also will be honored during the ceremony.
