Teacher arrested on drug-related charges at juvenile detention facility

WICHITA — The Wichita School District has placed a teacher on administrative leave with pay after a drug-related arrest Thursday at the Sedgwick County Juvenile Detention Facility.

The teacher was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of trafficking of contraband in a correctional facility by an employee, possession of drug paraphernalia and drug possession.

Mark Masterson, director of corrections for the county, said the teacher was arrested in the school area of the detention facility, not in the residential area. No residents of the center were involved in or witnessed the incident, he said.

District spokeswoman Susan Arensman said the teacher has been an employee for about 20 years but had just started teaching this fall at the detention facility at 700 S. Hydraulic.
