NEWTON — A mural in downtown Newton, part of the 2010 Kansas Community Mural Project, will be unveiled this weekend.
The 30-by-80-foot painting will be dedicated Sunday at 4 p.m. It is south of the historic Newton Depot on the north-facing wall of Combs Organ Co. in the 300 block of South Main in Newton.
The lead artist for the project is Dave Loewenstein, a nationally recognized muralist based in Lawrence. He was assisted by professional artists Erika Nelson of Lucas and Matthew Farley of Lawrence. More than 200 local residents also helped paint the mural.
A team of 22 community members met regularly throughout July and early August to share ideas and help shape a design for the mural.
