Police, fire officials want to emphasize protecting newborns

Kansas City area police and fire department officials will gather Thursday morning to raise awareness about protecting newborn babies.

Jim Corwin, Kansas City police chief, will speak at a 10 a.m. press conference, along with Ben Florance, Leawood fire chief and Nick Silverio, the Florida-based founder of Safe Haven for Newborns.

The news conference will be held in the west parking lot of Ward Parkway shopping center at 87th Street and Ward Parkway.

While both Missouri and Kansas have passed laws designed to protect newborn children from injury and death caused by abandonment, local organizers believe little has been done to educate Kansas City area parents where they can safely hand over their newborn babies without fear of prosecution.

The laws are intended to protect newborn infants from being abandoned or harmed by unprepared parents.
