Football game still on for Heights Stadium despite fire

WICHITA — The Wichita Heights football game with Southeast will be played at Heights Stadium on Friday night despite a fire Wednesday that damaged the press box.

"Structurally, it's safe," Heights football coach Rick Wheeler said today. "The floor on that one side (of the coach's box) is burned through; that's where the fire started."

Wheeler wasn't sure whether the press box would have electricity, though.

Fire investigators said maintenance workers using a torch accidentally touched off the blaze, which caused an estimated $20,000 in damage.

"It was one of those freak things that happened," Wheeler said.

The Sedgwick County Fire Department said the fire was reported about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 53rd Street North and Hillside.
