Republican hopefuls continue to spar in Kansas Senate race

WICHITA, Kan. | The rhetoric from the leading candidates in the U.S. Senate race in Kansas is getting tougher.

During a televised debate Monday night in Wichita, Todd Tiahrt accused fellow Republican Congressman Jerry Moran of having voted for amnesty for illegal immigrants.

That claim is based on Moran’s 2003 vote against a proposal to cut off funding for cities that refused to share information about illegal immigrants with federal authorities.

But Moran has said repeatedly that he has long opposed amnesty for illegal immigrants. Moran said Tiahrt is telling stories about him that simply aren’t true.

Mound City accountant Tom Little, who’s also running in the Aug. 3 GOP primary, said voters shouldn’t elect any longtime office holder.
