Provisional ballots to be counted Monday

Sedgwick County election commissioner Bill Gale has heard today from both Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau and former Wichita City Council member Sharon Fearey about their close race in the Democratic primary for county commission.

Faust-Goudeau won the primary for the District 4 seat by 60 votes. About 1,200 provisional ballots will be counted Monday by Sedgwick County officials, Gale said today.

He said Faust-Goudeau and Fearey had called him asking if the outcome of the results could change.

Gale said that could happen but is unlikely because provisional ballots typically follow voting trends. Two factors typically change an outcome, he said: An exceptionally close race and a lot of provisional ballots.

He doesn’t think that’s the case in this race, though he stopped short of saying so definitively.

The canvass will start at 10 a.m. Monday at the historic courthouse, 510 N. Main.

At this point, Faust-Goudeau will face political newcomer Richard Ranzau in November.
