WICHITA — Fire investigators aren't sure what started a fire that heavily damaged a house near downtown Wichita early this morning.
The fire, which was reported just after 5:30 a.m. at 834 N. Ohio, started on the front porch, Wichita Fire Capt. Stuart Bevis said.
"By the time the crews got there the fire had already traveled up the structure into the attic space," he said. "That caused quite a few issues."
It took firefighters several hours to find and extinguish flames and hot spots, he said.
Damage was set at $70,000, he said, meaning the house is nearly a total loss.
"There's several possibilities" as to the cause of the fire, Bevis said. "We're trying to collect more information."
Several adults and children were inside the house at the time of the fire, but they escaped without injury.
