Man gets 60-year sentence in 2008 killing

WICHITA _ Jason Cruz will have to live to be nearly 90 before seeing a parole board under a sentence for murder imposed by a Sedgwick County District Judge this afternoon.

Judge Ben Burgess sentenced Cruz, 28, to life in prison with no chance of parole for 50 years in the 2008 killing of 21-year-old Larry Barnett outside a Wichita nightclub.

Burgess then tacked on another 10 years from a previous conviction that had Cruz on parole at the time of the killing.

A jury convicted Cruz last month of killing Barnett on Aug. 24, 2008, outside Lightning Joe's club, near Kellogg and Ridge.
