Burglar dies after breaking into home

A burglar breaking into a house in north Wichita on Friday apparently killed himself by slitting his wrist on a windowpane as he broke into a house, police said.

The man, 38, apparently was trying to break into a house in the 2100 block of North Park Place, said Lt. Ken Landwehr.

The homeowner, a single man, was not home at the time. Police found blood not only on a door but a side window. The dead man was found three blocks away, he said. Landwehr declined to release the man's name. He said police are classifying the death, for now, as a public accident.

Police dispatchers on Friday received an initial report at 6:12 a.m. of a "cutting" involving a male victim.

" "We are basically checking to see if we can find out who might have been with this guy," Landwehr said. "There was a loss, some property is missing, but I don't want to say what yet."

The man had a police record. "He's had some arrests, we have some history with this guy, although nothing about burglary," Landwehr said.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy, but they are certain of the cause of death. "Everything we've seen is consistent with the cut wound to the left wrist and that he bled out afterward. We don't know whether he was cut trying to get in the window or door. There is blood on both."
