Man whose body was found in burned house had been shot

CURRENT VIEW, Mo. | An 81-year-old southeast Missouri man whose body was found after a weekend fire at his home had been shot, and the case is now under investigation as a homicide.

The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic reports that autopsies were performed Tuesday on Edgar Atkinson and 69-year-old Bonnie Chase. Both were found dead at their home in Current View.

The cause of death for Chase was undetermined. Toxicology results could take three to four weeks.

Ripley County Coroner Mike Jackson says Atkinson suffered a gunshot wound to the head and upper torso.

The one-story ranch home was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived about 11:45 p.m. Saturday.
