Wichita man critically hurt in turnpike crash

WICHITA — A 27-year-old Wichita man is in critical condition today as a result of injuries he sustained Tuesday afternoon on the Kansas Turnpike when his SUV struck the back of a semi-trailer truck stopped on the freeway shoulder.

Turnpike authorities said the collision occurred at 2:41 p.m. at milepost 33.3 near the Mulvane exit, when Matthew Krauer's vehicle drifted right as he was traveling north and struck the back of the semi stopped in the far right shoulder.

Krauer had to be extracted from the wreckage, and he was flown by Eagle Med to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. The semi had caution triangles dispersed to alert approaching traffic that it was broken down, authorities said.
