Four charged with murder in apartment shooting death

WICHITA — Four people arrested in the April 29 shooting death of a man at a southeast Wichita apartment complex were charged today with first-degree murder.

Kevin Brown, 22, Quartez Brown, 19, Jalessa Bonner, 19, and Kiara Williams, 19, were charged in the death of Otis Bolden Jr., 21.

Each defendant also was charged with one count of aggravated assault for allegedly threatening a 19-year-old woman who was at the apartment at the time of the shooting.

Wichita police said the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Bolden and the two female suspects.

The women were at the apartment on the morning of the shooting, police said, and left before returning with the male suspects.

Police said the Browns then went into the apartment and shot Bolden in his bed. Bolden broke through a window of the ground-floor apartment and stumbled a few hundred feet before collapsing.

Although Bolden and the Browns were gang members, police said, gang rivalries did not play a role in the shooting.

District Judge Ben Burgess set bond at $100,000 for Bonner and Williams, and he set bond at $500,000 for the Browns. All four were give court-appointed lawyers and ordered to return to court May 18 for a preliminary hearing.
