Pedestrian struck by car near Keeper of the Plains dies

WICHITA _ The Wichita man who was struck by a car as he crossed Central Avenue near the Keeper of the Plains statue Saturday night has died, police said.

William L. Jones, 44, died shortly after noon Monday at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. A 54-year-old woman told police she was westbound on Central in the right-hand lane at 9:05 p.m. Saturday when a man appeared in front of her car.

She tried to stop, she told police, but was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian. He was crossing Central from north to south in the 900 block when he was struck by the car, police said. He was not in a crosswalk at the time and there was not a streetlight on the north side of the street.

No charges have been filed in the case. The crash remains under investigation.

Jones' death is the seventh fatal traffic crash worked by Wichita police this year.
