Suspect in KU false alert surrenders to police

LAWRENCE | A 20-year-old man has surrendered to University of Kansas police in connection with a fictional account about an attacking intruder at a university dormitory.

University of Kansas spokeswoman Jill Jess said the man turned himself in this afternoon. She said he was being held on several outstanding arrest warrants.

Jess said the man, who is not a University of Kansas student, has not been charged in connection with the incident Friday at McCollum Hall.

Police were called to McCollum Hall after a resident reported overhearing a man yelling "Where's my gun? Where's my gun?"

Police said the suspect created a description of a nonexistent attacker and lied to police about his name.

The university activated its emergency notification system and police conducted a room-by-room search.
