Clerk beaten, 3 arrested in robbery

WICHITA — Two men and a 16-year-old juvenile are in custody for robbing a west Wichita convenience store shortly after 2 a.m. this morning.

The men entered the Petro America at 2838 W. Central at 2:05 a.m., according to Gordon Bassham, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.

One of the men was in the process of purchasing an item in the store. When the clerk opened the cash register, another man jumped behind the counter and began beating the clerk.

"The third suspect took cash from the cash register," Bassham said.

The men then forced the clerk into the back room where they got more money and continued to beat the clerk.

"The suspects then put the clerk in a cooler at the store and continued to beat him with their fists and brass knuckles," Bassham said.

When the suspects left the store, Bassham said, the clerk was able to get a description of the vehicle and called 911.

Wichita police officers stopped the vehicle in the 1700 block of south K-42 and found evidence in the vehicle of the robbery.

The three were then arrested. The two men were booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. The 16-year-old boy was taken to the juvenile intake and assessment center.

The clerk refused medical attention.
