WICHITA — Kansas.com's multimedia package on Father Emil Kapaun is a finalist for the Schachern Award, given by the Religion Newswriters Association for best multimedia packages covering religion.
The Eagle produced the multimedia package, a documentary and an eight-part series on Father Kapaun, a native of Pilsen who died in a prisoner of war camp during the Korean War. He has been recommended for the Medal of Honor, and the Vatican is investigating his case for sainthood.
The winner of the Schachern Award will be announced at the group's annual banquet in September. The other finalists are the Chicago Tribune; Ottawa (Canada) Citizen; Louisville Courier-Journal, and Salt Lake TribuneOnline.
To visit the Kapaun site on Kansas.com, go to Kansas.com/kapaun. It includes the eight-part series, trailers for the documentary, photo galleries, video interviews with men who served with him, sermons by Father Kapaun, and other personal letters and documents.
