Man dies in OKC after trading shots with police

OKLAHOMA CITY — Police say a man is dead after he exchanged gunfire with Oklahoma City officers.

Police did not identify either the man killed or the officers involved in the shootings about 3 p.m. Saturday.

Police Capt. Patrick Stewart said the incident began about 2 p.m. as University of Oklahoma police tried to make a traffic stop near the OU Health Sciences Center. Stewart said the driver sped away, then crashed his car and fled.

Stewart said Oklahoma City police located the man hiding in a trash can behind a home. According to Stewart, when an officer lifted the can's lid, the man popped out and opened fire. The police spokesman said that officer, wearing a bulletproof vest, suffered only a minor injury.

Stewart said another officer returned fire on the suspect, apparently killing him.
