MULVANE — A 22-year-old man died today after his car struck the back of a Fed Ex truck that had stopped to turn from K-53 onto South Oliver, a sheriff's official said.
The man was pronounced dead about noon after being taken by air ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Sedgwick County sheriff's Lt. Brad Hoch said. The man's name was not being released until relatives could be notified.
The accident occurred about 10:45 a.m. on K-53 west of Mulvane.
The truck driver was not injured.
According to witnesses, the westbound truck was stopped on K-53 with its turn signal on, and the driver was waiting to turn left onto South Oliver, when for some unknown reason the car hit the rear of the truck, Hoch said.
It's not clear whether the car driver could have been distracted or had some medical condition right before the collision, he said.
A preliminary investigation found no skid marks.
Hoch did not know the speed of the car. The speed limit on that stretch of K-53 is 55 mph.
The impact destroyed the front half of the car, a gold Honda Accord.
The man had been trapped in the vehicle for a short time before being taken by air ambulance to Wesley, Hoch said.
It appears that the man lived in Mulvane and has relatives in the area, Hoch said.
