Former Northwest High teacher charged with sex crimes

WICHITA — The former vocal music teacher at Northwest High School will face a preliminary hearing next week on charges of having sex with a student.

Charles L. Edwards, 30, has a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 29.

Edwards was charged last week with three counts of unlawful sexual relations with an 18-year-old student.

Under Kansas law, it is illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student of any age.

Edwards was released on his own recognizance in lieu of $25,000 bond, according to court records. He's been ordered to have no contact with the student who is the reported victim in the case.

Edwards was placed on paid administrative leave after the incident was reported. He has since resigned, a district official said today.

According to information Edwards posted on the Northwest website, he is a graduate of Wichita State University who had been at Northwest for four years.
